DHL’s Disaster Response Team Awaits Green Light for Myanmar Mission
On Saturday May 5, Myanmar’s Irrawaddy delta region was struck by Cyclone Nargis. The devastation and loss of life is significant, with many estimates suggesting that over 80,000 people have died – with many more injured and homeless. The current situation is serious, and we are thankful that all employees of our independent agent in Myanmar are accounted for.
DHL's Disaster Response Team (DRT) has been activated and is awaiting a UN mandate to commence deployment. A DHL DRT member is already on the ground in Rangoon, the capital, to support efforts to facilitate the deployment in as efficient manner as possible. A detailed update regarding specifics of the deployment will be shared as soon as we have more information. Meanwhile, DHL has already dispatched relief supplies to support the staff of our independent agent in Myanmar, and is providing overall support to relief efforts being organized out of Thailand.
On behalf of the entire DHL organization we encourage people to support the relief efforts through cash donations, via appropriate channels, like Red Cross and UNICEF. DHL is also exploring other channels to accept monetary donations; we will let you know about these options soon.
